Cypress Creek Mirror: Cypress - Cy-Fair Edition - 8/27/2017

The Living Legacy Center, a nonprofit organization aiming to provide resources for veterans, veterans' families, special needs and seniors, held a grand opening for its new center this month.

The center officially opened its doors on Aug. 19 and to celebrate the new facility, a fundraiser barbecue was held at the event. Grand opening fundraising efforts yielded more than $3,000 for the center. The funds will be used to furnish the center with needed computers and other miscellaneous equipment.

"We are so thrilled to announce that the grand opening of The Living Legacy Center was a great success. We had a fantastic turn out," Kathie Snyder said, spokesperson for the Living Legacy Center barbecue. "We would like to send out a huge thank you to Integrated Corrosion who donated our food, with which we were able to feed more than 100 people. We also want to send a special thank you Lonestar Military Maintenance who helped support this fabulous event by arranging that donation.

Earlier this year, The Living Legacy Center and Lone Star Military Maintenance teamed up to serve veterans in a multitude of ways.

"Part of our mission is to address not only the legal needs of veterans, but social needs as well," said Elizabeth Hilbun, president and founder of Living Legacy Center. "One of those needs is employment and this is what the two organizations' passions are all about."

Lone Star Military Maintenance is a 100 percent veteran-owned, -staffed and -operated corporation that employs U.S. veterans in the commercial maintenance industry. The organization which is a local chapter of the U.S. Military Maintenance Network serves Conroe, Spring, The Woodlands, and the Greater Houston area.

The two organizations hope their collaboration will better serve veterans in the community by making it easier to gain employment and organize proper documents in other areas of their life.

Raymond Amador Jr. is the sales director for Lone Star Military Maintenance, and he is also a U.S. Army retired veteran.

"When Lone Star has job fairs, Living Legacy will always have a booth in there to assist our veterans to make sure the transition is smooth not only for us getting them employment, but making sure they are getting documentations in order," Amador said. "That way, when they need to go to Veteran Affairs, or apply for disability getting their military files and personal files won't be an issue."

The Living Legacy Center, which was founded in 2015, was created to protect the community's seniors, veterans, and special-needs population at no cost to those who are receiving assistance.

Workshops held through the organization cover topics such as wills, trusts and power of attorney. The center will be operated by appointment.

Some of the services provided by the center includes estate planning, guardianship, special needs planning, Medicaid and veteran's benefits. The center aims to close the gap between available services and benefits.

"Part of our mission is to address not only the legal needs of veterans, but social needs as well," said Elizabeth Hilbun, president and founder of Living Legacy Center. "We have two types of veterans that we service and that is elderly veterans and returning veterans. The returning veterans may have social issues such as needing an apartment or buying a house."

The Living Legacy Center has launched three phases. Phase one is an interactive website, which is now running, complete with a library of resources, videos, forms, instructions, links, and tutorials. Phase two is the physical location where a life coach can walk a senior, veteran, special-needs individual or their families through their unique situation. The center will help veterans locate resources for housing, medical benefits, veterans' benefits and other legal issues. Phase three is to replicate these centers across the country.
